What About Robotics?

The surgeons at DISC of Louisiana pride themselves on always using the latest technology and treatments to better our patients’ care. Northshore spine surgeon, Dr. K. Samer Shamieh, and Hammond spine surgeon, Dr. Jeremy James, are two of only a handful of doctors around the world trained to use robotics during minimally invasive spine surgery.

DISC of Louisiana uses the Globus ExcelsiusGPS to plan each patient’s surgery based on each person’s anatomy. Medical images are imported into ExcelsiusGPS and the surgeon uses them to determine the size and placement of each implant. ExcelsiusGPS will also guide the surgeon to the specific region of your spine to help place implants accurately. ExcelsiusGPS utilizes preoperative CT scans, intraoperative CT scans and X-ray imaging to allow our surgeons to plan each procedure based on the specific anatomy of each patient and determine the position of the instruments and the size of the implants precisely. Our spine robot shows the procedure in real time on a screen for the spine surgeon to monitor and make a more informed clinical decision. The spine robots imaging technology may also reduce the amount of radiation required through the procedure.

The spine robot’s rigid robotic arm will automatically move along the spine, along the pre-planned trajectory to guide surgeons during surgery and allows for a precise incision and implant during surgery.
